Privacy Policy

Ohene is built on a simple belief. Your memories are yours. This policy explains, plainly, what stays on your device, the little that can leave it, what rights you have wherever you live, and everything we never touch.

The short version

Ohene is local-first. Your writing, voice notes, photos, files, and the reading Sankofa makes of them all live on your iPhone. There is no account to create and no Ohene server holding your inner life. We do not track you as a person, we do not build a profile of you, and we never sell or share your data.

Your writing leaves your phone in only two situations, and both are your choice: if you subscribe to Ohene Pro and allow cloud reading, excerpts are sent to produce the deeper reading; and if you turn on iCloud sync, your memories sync to your own private iCloud. On the free tier, none of your writing is ever sent anywhere.

What stays on your device

Apart from the two choices above, the following stays on your iPhone:

• Everything you write, speak, photograph, or attach. Photos and voice recordings are never sent for a reading.
• The reflections, connections, wisdom classifications, Ask Sankofa's answers, and search. This intelligence runs on-device.
• What Sankofa has learned about you, and the constellation of your memories.
• Voice memories. Ohene transcribes them on your device. Quick dictation into the search and Ask bars uses Apple's speech recognition, on your device when your language supports it and otherwise Apple's speech service, under Apple's privacy policy.

Almost all of Ohene works offline. The deeper cloud reading needs a connection; without one, Sankofa reads on your device.

What can leave your device

Cloud reading (Ohene Pro, only with your permission)

Some Pro features can use a cloud artificial-intelligence model from Anthropic: chiefly the reading that connects your memories across months, and also a short reflection after you save an entry, how two connected memories relate, and Sankofa continuing when you ask it to tell you more, each only when your device cannot produce it on its own. After you subscribe, Ohene asks whether to allow this. Nothing is sent unless you choose Allow cloud reading, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings. If you keep it on your device, Ohene still works and those readings are simpler.

When cloud reading is allowed, excerpts from your entries are sent over an encrypted connection, through Ohene's own server, to Anthropic, only to produce that reading. The largest reading can include excerpts from up to your 150 most recent entries. Photos, voice recordings, Apple Health data, and your name are never sent.

• Ohene's server passes the request through and does not store your writing.
• Anthropic does not use it to train its models, and deletes it automatically, normally within 30 days, unless it needs to keep it longer to enforce its usage policy or comply with law.

Entries that mention self-harm, suicide, abuse, or eating disorders are never sent, whatever your setting.

On the free tier, no writing is sent to Anthropic or anyone else.

The on-device voice model

The first time you record a voice memory, Ohene downloads a speech-recognition model (about 140 MB) from Hugging Face, which hosts it. That download request contains no content from your journal. The model then runs entirely on your device.

A device identifier

When a cloud reading is requested, that request carries a random identifier that Ohene creates on your device and keeps in the iOS Keychain. It exists for one reason: to enforce the daily limit on those readings. Ohene's server keeps a count against it that expires after about a day. It is not your name, your email, or an advertising identifier, and it is not connected to any account, because Ohene has no accounts. It is never sold, never shared, and never used to follow you across other apps or websites. It is sent only with the requests described above, so if those never happen, it is never sent.

Ohene contains no analytics service, no advertising identifiers, no cross-app trackers, and no data brokers.

Apple Health (optional)

If you connect Apple Health, Ohene reads your State of Mind entries to notice a heavy week, and can save how a memory felt back to Health when you choose to. This data stays on your device and in Apple Health. It is never sent to Anthropic or to any server of ours, and it is not used for advertising.

iOS Search

So you can find a memory from your iPhone's Search, Ohene can add memory titles and tags (never their text) to iOS Search on your device. When App Lock is on, Ohene adds nothing and clears what it added.

iCloud sync (optional)

You may choose to turn on iCloud sync so your memories are available across your own devices. When you do, syncing happens through your personal Apple iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit framework. The data travels between your devices and your private iCloud. Ohene has no access to it and cannot read it. Sync is off by default and can be turned off at any time.

Subscriptions and payment

Ohene Pro is purchased through Apple's App Store using StoreKit. Payment is handled entirely by Apple. We never see or store your card details, and your subscription status is managed by Apple, not by us.

Who we are

Ohene is made by Talka Technologies. For the purposes of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, and similar laws, Talka Technologies is the data controller for the limited processing described in this policy. You can reach us at admin@talkatechnologies.com.

Why we are allowed to process what little we do

Where European or UK data-protection law applies, our legal bases for processing are:

• Your consent, including your explicit consent where your writing may reveal health or other sensitive information, for cloud reading. You give it by choosing Allow cloud reading and can withdraw it at any time in Settings.
• Legitimate interests for the device identifier that accompanies a cloud reading, used only to enforce the daily limit, balanced against and never overriding your privacy.

Your rights

Because Ohene is local-first, you already hold and control nearly all of your data yourself. Depending on where you live, including the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and California, you also have the right to:

• Access the personal data relating to you.
• Correct or update it.
• Erase it.
• Take it with you in a portable, machine-readable format.
• Restrict or object to certain processing.
• Withdraw any consent you have given.
• Not have your personal information sold or shared. We never sell or share it.

Most of these you can exercise yourself, instantly, inside the app: your memories live on your device, you can export them at any time in plain formats, deleting a memory permanently (or deleting the app) removes it along with its photos, recordings, and any Search entry, and you can turn cloud reading off in Settings. Because we hold no account and keep no server copy of your writing, there is usually nothing for us to retrieve or delete on your behalf. For anything you cannot do yourself, email admin@talkatechnologies.com and we will respond within the time the law requires. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data-protection authority: in the EU, your national supervisory authority; in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

California residents: we do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act, and we do not discriminate against you for exercising any of the rights above.

International data transfers

If you allow cloud reading, excerpts are processed by Anthropic, whose processing may take place in the United States. Where this involves transferring data out of the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, that transfer is protected by appropriate safeguards, including the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK equivalent). As above, Anthropic does not train on it and deletes it, normally within 30 days.

How long we keep things

We keep almost nothing. Your memories are retained on your device for as long as you keep them, under your control. Ohene's server does not store the excerpts sent for cloud readings; Anthropic deletes them, normally within 30 days. The daily count kept against your device identifier expires after about a day. We hold no account, so when you leave there is nothing of yours for us to retain. Deleting the app removes your data, and if you used iCloud sync, removing the data and disabling sync clears it from your iCloud as well.

This website

This site sets no tracking cookies, runs no analytics scripts, and carries no advertising pixels. It makes no third-party requests at all: even the fonts are served from our own domain rather than a font CDN, so visiting this site sends nothing about you to anyone else and builds no profile of you.

Children

Ohene is intended for adults and is rated 18+ on the App Store. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Because the app holds no accounts and stores its data on the user's own device, it collects no personal information about anyone through our servers.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, note the change in the app. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
